Grooves on the Green

Fun was had by all at Grooves on the Green in Ashley Cross on the 13th July. Thanks for all your support. We now have our campaign bags for sale- so any shops if you're interested in raising awareness by selling our bags please send us an email.
Success for the sponsored dog walk!

Walking is such hungry work! A big THANK YOU to everybody who took part and sponsored us for the dog walk on Sunday 30th March. We were blessed with glorious weather and feasted on wonderful cake thanks to Mrs A. We managed to raise around £400 which helped us purchase our campaign bags.

MESSAGE IN THE WAVES

We showed the moving documentary at the Britannia Pub, Ashley Cross in April. Thanks to the Britannia Pub for kindly lending us their dining room!
DARLING'S BUDGET

There was talk in the recent budget of a possible tax on plastic bags if the shops do not voluntarily sort out the problem. This is not necessarily a positive move......
Why?
If a tax were imposed on plastic bags alone, then what will probably happen is that shops would start to offer paper bags which unfortunately aren't really an environmentally sound solution. See our alternative page to find out why.
However, a tax on any 'free' bag (including paper, degradable, biodegradable) would be a better solution as it would train people to re-think- in other words, people would be more likely to RE-USE their bags- which is the only REAL solution.
M & S

The big chain announces a 5p charge on their carrier bags (only a trial charge)
"to make it easy for our customers to do their bit to help the environment".
Well, if that is all people have to do in order to help the environment, then who can help this planet???
What a lot of hype - a great public relations coup!
But it is at least a step in the right direction except..
Is 5p really a big enough deterrent these days?
The 5p is only for the larger carrier bags, the small sandwich ones are still free- in fact you can see many of them walking about at lunch- a popular classic full of lots of plastic lunch waste- shouldn't the price be put on all plastic bags?
All carrier bags are still free and in abundance at the self check out- how do you control that?
Hopefully their Plan A will make a difference, but maybe the changes need to be greater?
ASDA makes moves in the right direction...
Britain's second- largest supermarket chain will introduce a 'bag on request' system from the beginning of June.
It will remove all single use carrier bags from its checkouts and customers will have to ask for a bag if they need one to pack their groceries. - How about charging?

DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED MORE INCENTIVES TO USE THEIR OWN BAGS?
CHINA
Beginning on June 1, all supermarkets, department stores and shops will be prohibited from giving out free plastic bags, the State Council said. Stores must clearly mark the price of plastic shopping bags and are banned from tacking that price onto products. - This should really be our incentive to follow suit in the UK perhaps?
